Why Use Peas as Feedstock?

Initially, corn was widely used as the feedstock for ethanol plants in the United States, but corn has several limitations as a feedstock, and there is a growing backlash against using a food crop to power vehicles.  The push is on to develop a sustainable alternative to using corn.

Agronomically, field peas fix nitrogen, which lowers production costs and reduces the crop’s carbon footprint. Greenhouse gas considerations are an important aspect in future biofuels. In addition, field peas can break disease cycles prevalent in traditional small-grain rotations.
